Online Courses>>

  • MI Institute offers online courses are intended to train the next generation of MI educators and supporters.  We offer and develop courses tailored to learners' differing levels of experience with MI and to different learning goals and applications of MI theory.

The origins of the MII courses can be traced back to Harvard’s WIDE World courses.  Started in 1999, Harvard’s WIDE World has become one of the leaders in distance education.  The effectiveness of its courses have been recognized and proven by many organizations around the world.  Multiple Intelligences Course is one of the founding courses at WIDE.  Julie Viens, Managing Director of MII, was one of the original creators of the course.  MII’s online course is the second generation of the WIDE course where Ms. Viens has incorporated changes during the recent years and included many years of research results from practitioners.

Dr. Howard Gardner, creator of MI theory, serves as an MII advisory board member and regularly reviews Institute efforts, including our online course offerings.  His oversight is central to our mission, as we are focused on developing and offering products and services inspired and informed by an understanding of MI theory as conceived by Gardner and studied and applied by Gardner and his team at Harvard University’s Project Zero (among them,  Julie Viens). The breakdown of the courses is of below:

    Online Certificate Courses

The MI Institute currently offers the online certificate course, Multiple Intelligences in Early Childhood Education (MI in ECE).  This is the first of an expanding suite of MI courses. Participants who successfully complete one of these courses receive a certificate of course completion.  We are working with highly-lauded universities from the US to transfer our course work into credits at their degree programs.  The transfer will be available later this year.

The Teacher Certification Program offers a vehicle for educators to document and gain formal recognition of their authentic MI practices. The program is comprised of two required online courses:  an MI Certificate course (e.g., MI in Early Childhood, MI K-12) and a Practicum Course, which corresponds with and supports the candidate's on-site self-directed Practicum.

Practicum participants complete an MI Teacher Portfolio to demonstrate fulfillment of criteria of sound and effective MI-based practices.  Guided through the online practicum course, teachers complete their portfolios over a four-fi ve month period.  The courses and practicum that make up the Teacher Certification Program are designed to support the development and improvement, as well as documentation of teachers' MI practices.

"I participated in the MI in ECE certification course, and found each session to be extremely engaging and thought-provoking! It is clear all the facilitators really know a lot about MI theory and want to share their knowledge with others. Thank you to the MI Institute for giving me such a great introduction to MI theory and how to use it in the classroom!"
